Civic Engagement

Beginning with my appointment as Director of the Rutgers Citizenship and Service Education (CASE) Program in 1994, I have spent an increasing amount of my time engaged in an effort to understand how individuals form—or reform—ties to others in their vicinity. Specifically, I have tried to understand how people establish, literally through witting acts of political invention, secure and democratic communities in the aftermath of the worst imaginable acts of barbarism: apartheid, authoritarian dictatorship, civil war, genocide and totalitarian rule. And, more to the point, I suppose, I have engaged myself in what might best be described as applied research: the self-conscious development of research designs, the identification of hypotheses, and real world testing of these hypotheses in one program or another. Though not published, I like to think of such youth training programs as Global Partnerships for Activism and Cross-Cultural Training in the Balkans, curriculum and faculty development programs in Lebanon and South Africa, and higher education reform efforts in Eastern and Central Europe as my equivalent of “publications,” except that for me, at least, they cut closer to the bone.
