All datasets are in SPSS data table format.
Dataset 1: Export Data
Project Lead: Alton Worthington
Country
exports aggregated by sector: Exports for 96 countries, 1980 to 1999,
aggregated at the 1 and 2 digit SITC code level by sector (0, 1, 4, 22,
29, 21, 24, 26, 27, 28, 32, 33, 34, 35, 63, 66, 68, 23, 25, 5, 62, 64,

Dataset 2: Labor Database
Project lead: Meredith Staples
Trade union data for 96 countries, 1980-1999 (names, industry,
membership, strike activity-frequency/length/striker numbers, etc.),
with industries classified by sectors aggregated at the 2 digit SITC
code level by sector ((0, 1, 4, 22, 29, 21, 24, 26, 27, 28, 32, 33, 34,
35, 63, 66, 68, 23, 25, 5, 62, 64, 67, 69, 71, 73, 74, 78, 79, 54, 72,
75, 76, 87, 88, 26, 60, 61, 65, 77, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 89).
The
Labor dataset (Data Set II) will be a compendium of workforce
statistics and labor union strength indicators drawn from over 100
countries from 1980 to the present. The data collection will derive
primarily from statistics compiled by individual countries and from
organizations such as the ILO and the World Bank. However, since much
additional research is needed to augment the previously complied
statistics especially in terms of labor union strength, additional
in-depth research will be carried out by CGSD research assistants.
Indicators that will be included in the dataset range from number of
union members as percentage of the nonagricultural workforce, union
density and number of ILO treaties ratified to percentage of
unemployment and percentage of female workers employed in formal
sector. This data set is unique in its goal of providing possibly the
most exhaustive collection of indicators of both workforce and union
strength statistics from across the globe.
